Welcome to the 2016-17 school year at Hutto Middle School! I am looking forward to this year and the amazing students that I will have the opportunity to teach. This is my 2nd year at HMS and I love being a Hutto Hippo! There is so much pride here and it is contagious! I grew up in Del Rio and went on to cheer at Angelo State University. I live in Round Rock with my husband and our two babies but we come to Hutto for everything because it's so much closer to where we live and we love the community feel.

I hope to impact the lives of each one of my students through my passion and love of science! There are so many fun lessons planned, and through class discussion and critical thinking, my students will be sure to grow intellectually. We will throw in some fun and exciting labs along the way as well! We are utilizing an awesome tool called a Unit Organizer and this will help give you and your students an idea of what we will be learning in the near future and an amazing study guide. My door is always open to questions, suggestions, or comments. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email.

Unit 2

We are at the tail end of our second unit, Flow of Energy, already! We've discussed photosynthesis and cellular respiration and have moved on to food webs, food chains, and energy pyramids. Have your kiddos explain these to you! If they can teach it or explain it, they'll have a better understanding of the knowledge!
Just a reminder, photosynthesis projects are due Monday, September 19. That gives you one more full weekend to wrap things up.
Unit 2 test will be Wednesday, September 21.
This week we will be getting more practice on food chains, food webs, and energy pyramids by creating items for our interactive notebooks and doing a worksheet.
Just a reminder, students are always welcome to bring home their books and journals. We keep them in class so that they don't have to keep them in their already heavy backpacks, but the items belong to them so they can take them home at any time. Just remember to return them so we have them for class.
Have a great rest of your week!

August 29th - September 2nd

We had a great first week of school last week and I'm very excited about what this year will bring! Your student should have brought home a class expectations and lab safety contract home last week to have signed and returned to school. Please return those as soon as possible, if they haven't already.
This week we'll continue with Unit 1, Science Safety and Procedures.
Monday - Safety Quiz (was scheduled for last Friday but we pushed it back)
                Begin Scientific Method
Tuesday - Finish Scientific Method posters and present
Wednesday - Lab Tools, charts, and graphs refresher
Thursday - Lab Safety Circuit review
Friday - Unit 1 Test
This is a quick unit and one that is really a refresher on what to expect in science class, which should be very similar to the same expectations they had in 6th grade. Everyone seems to be doing well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Due to teaching during the day, email usually best. Have a great week and 3 day weekend!

First Week of School!!

Welcome back, Hutto Hippos! It's going to be a fabulous year in 7th grade. I will try to post our weekly plans here so that parents can stay up to date with what's going on in our classroom.
Monday - First Day of School
Tuesday - Classroom Expectations will be sent home, please sign and return
Wednesday - Launch our first unit! Science Safety and Procedures
Thursday - Lab Safety Rules and Safety Equipment. Lab Safety Contract will be sent home, please sign and return
Friday - SpongeBob Safety Activity and Lab Safety Quiz
Also, please bring your school supplies this first week, as some of it will stay at school. In science we will need a spiral notebook to keep in class, this was not on the original school supply list but a composition notebook is much smaller and we may have trouble fitting things in there. Last I checked, they were $0.17 at Wal-Mart. Please let me know if there is a financial burden for the spiral notebooks.
I look forward to working with you and each of your students this year. Let me know if there is anything I can do to make this year even better!
