WELCOME STUDENTS AND PARENTS!

My name is Abbie Rodriguez and I have the privilege of teaching 8th grade science here at Hutto Middle School.  This is an exciting transition for me back into the Hippo Nation! I graduated from Hutto High School and then attended Texas A&M University (whoop!), graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Environmental Sciences.

I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science for the last 2 years which gave me the unique opportunity to determine which subject is my favorite, and you guessed it, its 8th Grade!  8th grade science focuses on earth science, chemistry, life sciences, physical sciences, and astronomy.  Basically, students will get a little bit of everything.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will get back to you as soon as possible.  As a coach, I will have before and after school responsibilities but I will always do my best to make academics my highest priority.

Week @ a Glance: 10/26 - 10/27

We are continuing Unit 5: Force and Motion this week, specifically focusing on the differences between speed, velocity, and acceleration.  We will be graphing motion and and analyzing graphs to determine the motion of an object.

This Friday we will have the Unit 5 Assessment and the "Motion Graphs" homework is due.

Thanks!

Week @ a Glance: 10/13-10/16

This week we will continue in Unit 4: Chemical Formulas.  Our main focus will be balancing chemical equations.  We have learned that the reactants and products must have the same number of atoms of each element due to the Law of Conservation of Mass.

There is a homework assignment due on Friday as well as the first Science CFA of the year!  The CFA will cover everything we have learned up to this point.  Please review your notes and Unit Organizers to help refresh before the assessment!

Thank you,
Coach Rodriguez
Week @ a Glance: 10/5-10/9

We will continue Unit 4: Chemical Formulas this week focusing mainly on the types of reactions and evidence that a reaction has occurred.  We will be reviewing physical and chemical changes as well.

There is homework due on Friday: Physical and Chemical Changes Worksheet.

There is a quiz on Friday as well.

Thank you!

Week @ a Glance: 9/28 -10/2

We started Unit 4: Chemical Formulas yesterday and will continue with this unit for 3 weeks.  This is a fun unit that does involve utilizing our math skills to count atoms, balance equations, and determine what types of substances are represented.

There will be a quiz on Friday (10/2) over "Counting Atoms".
FRIENDLY REMINDER:

You have a Unit Assessment tomorrow over Unit 2: Atomic Structure.

Please study!

Thank you,

Week @ a Glance (9/8-9/11)

This week we will continue Unit 2: Atomic Structure.

  • Homework due on Friday
  • Unit 2 Assessment on Friday

Thanks and gig'em!
Coach Rodriguez
Happy Monday!

As we begin Week 2 (already??), we will introduce UNIT 2 which covers atomic structure.  This includes protons, neutrons, and electrons, as well as models used by scientists to describe an atom's specific structure.

Some important vocabulary:
  • atom

  • atomic mass

  • atomic number

  • electrical charge

  • electron

  • electron cloud

  • proton

  • neutron

  • nucleus

  • valence electrons

  • reactivity
  • identity

I'm excited to dive into our Chemistry Units!

Google Classroom

Happy Thursday!

If you are having trouble accessing Google Classroom, I think I have figured out the problem.  I thought any email could access it as long as you had the code.  However, it needs to be an email linked to a school server.  I will walk students through the process on Monday!

Thank you to all of you who have already tried and provided me with feedback!
